Offered for your consideration is a rare mid-19. Stoneware jug with an exceptional free-hand cobalt decoration. Original Troy, New York circa 1850's skillfully thrown salt glazed jug. The one-gallon whiskey jug has a nicely glazed medium tan mottled patina with lovely age and dark brown Albany slip interior.

The front features a scroll and dot design in slip-trailed cobalt, which was hand-painted by the well-known artist of the day Riley (sp). To decorate the vessel, the painter applied a metallic oxide clay slip that turned a rich blue when fired. This deep blue color is seen on the brushed cobalt elaborate decoration and on the incised makers name on the front of the jug.

The jugs blue decorated design contrasts beautifully with its light clay, which makes it extremely visually pleasing. A well-potted, cylindrical form with eased shoulder, semi-squared spout and an.
