A very rare original authentic Antique German stoneware Westerwald tavern Stein Tankard, mug with the Royal Cypher GR = George Rex. The Tankards are always much more difficult to find than the jugs. Most of these GR Tankards / mug & jugs were especially made for the English market, also a good number of them ended up in many place of the world as far as Australia, Africa, and America.The date of this jug is app. 1714 - 1727, Reign of George I, Guaranteed. The size = 15.5 cm = 6.10 Inches.
CONDITION: This rare Tankard has a very shallow glaze flake on the outside of the top rim with associated vertical, 2.9 inches very thin, tight hairline. Also another vertical, thin / tight hairline and an extremely very small hairline near the handle. Above the handle in earlier days they made a horizontal incision to keep a pewter lid more tight. It is possible that the mentioned hairlines were always in this tankard, The majority of these Westerwald stoneware pieces have these lines and were probably caused by shrinkage when cooling of to sudden.
The tankard is fully inspected with the point of a sharp scalpel as nowadays invisible professional restorations cannot be detected anymore by a black-light or the'naked eye'.
