The description says Norton type due to the style of cobalt blue decoration on this very rare 3 gallon Maine stoneware cooler by EVANS & BAILEY, PORTLAND ME. In excellent original condition-mid to last quarter 19th Century. Generally these Maine pieces are rare, coolers even more so. The decoration is reminiscent of the work of artists who decorated for J & E Norton stoneware and it is quite possible that an itinerant Norton artist did this. This decoration is bold and although there is fry, it is still outstanding. There is fry in the blue bands-difficult to see. T he spigot is beautifully crafted but possibly later. There is an old flat chip as seen at the top. Mentioned for accuracy: uniform normal fluorescence under professional black light-there is an approximately 3 inch by 1/8th inch line on the side that shows a different color under black light-NOT restoration but clay variant; there is a small kiln pop (photo 7) otherwise this piece is in excellent original condition -NO restoration. Underneath EVANS and to the right of ME. Are little rectangular impressions which we are not familiar with.
