Description : A large salt-glazed Stoneware Serving Pitcher with profuse Cobalt Floral Decoration, 2-Gallon capacity, attributed to the pottery of J&E Norton, Bennington, Vermont, ca. A successful wheel-thrown form with heavily tooled spout and applied strap handle. Front features a very large "Double Thistle" Decoration, artistically executed in the boldest of Slip-Trailed Cobalt. The design is highly-consistent with other J&E Norton Thistles during this period.

There is a 2 impressed near the top of the decoration. See Internet for similar examples from this highly respected VT manufactory. Fun Fact : Generally, the number of Thistles would also indicate the wares capacity (in gallons). Condition : An in-the-making stone pop (front, upper left) and tiny flake on lower rim (left side), as shown; otherwise in Excellent to Near Mint condition with wonderful form, strong color and fine decoration.

This Pitcher survives in remarkable as-made condition. No fry, cracks, no repairs, no restoration work. Displays brilliantly; highly appropriate for the advanced collector of American Stoneware. See photos for complete details and close-ups. Please consider them as part of the description.

Measures 12-3/4"H x 8-1/2W overall with a base diameter of 7-3/4". The rim diameter is approximately 6.
