Description : A fine 19thC Stoneware Tobacco Jar or Storage Crock with freehand cobalt brushwork, Mid-Atlantic US origin, probably Baltimore MD or Alexandria VA, mid-1800s. Wheel-thrown, bulbous ovoid form with rounded rim, applied tab-form handles and pronounced beaded base. There is an impressed circular capacity mark (1-1/2) on the upper shoulder. Profusely-decorated with a continuous Tulip Garland in bold, Brushed Cobalt. Both handles are highlighted with cobalt accents and there is a wavy freehand line near the base that continues around the perimeter.

Condition : Very Good++ with strong color, desirable form and attractive decoration. Rim with some minor wear and soiling from use; otherwise undamaged. Left Handle has an old surface chip, as shown (photo #5). Body with slight wear and soiling; otherwise fine.

It has not been cleaned. Inherent glaze, surface and firing imperfections noted for descriptive accuracy. Heel has a faint v-shape hairline that extends partially into the base (see close-ups, photo #11 & #12). Base with faint hairline, some staining and slight wear along the perimeter edge, as shown.
