Antique Stoneware 2G Jug with Cobalt Bird, Bullard & Scott, Cambridge MA, ca. 1875  Antique Stoneware 2G Jug with Cobalt Bird, Bullard & Scott, Cambridge MA, ca. 1875
Description : A Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Bird Decoration, 2-Gallon capacity, New England origin, ca. Wheel-thrown, cylindrical form with eased shoulder, tooled spout and applied lug handle. Salt-Glazed exterior; Albany Slip interior. Impressed on the upper shoulder with a crisp, cobalt-washed stamp: BULLARD & SCOTT / CAMBRIDGEPORT, MASS, with a capacity designation below. Little is known about the partnership of Joseph Bullard and Alexander Scott, and their stoneware manufactory located in the Allston neighborhood of Boston. Laura Woodside Watkins mentions it briefly in Early New England Potters and Their Wares , however. I have always assumed the pair were merchants of some kind. Front features a large Song Bird perched on a stylized sprig, artistically executed in bold Slip-Trailed Cobalt. Likely a decorator hired by the firm from Upstate New York. Condition : Inherent glaze, surface and firing imperfections throughout, as shown; otherwise Very Good with strong color and desirable decoration. No repaired damage or restoration work. Theres an old cork rattling around on the interior.

The base has expected wear. The spout and rim are in nearly perfect condition.

See photos for complete details and close-ups. Please consider them as part of the description. Measures approximately 14-3/4"H x 8-3/4"W overall. Good Luck, thanks for looking, and be sure to bookmark my Auctions, listed and ending daily.
