An attractive, Salt-Glazed Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Floral Decoration, 4-Gallon capacity, New York State origin, ca. I believe the circular stamp came a bit later.
Wheel-thrown, cylindrical form with eased shoulder and applied strap handle. Impressed on the shoulder with a crisp, cobalt-washed stamp reading: 4 / N. See Internet for further information on the Greene County family manufactory. Front features a large Double-Stemmed Tulip or Floral artistically executed in the boldest of Brushed and Slip-Trailed Cobalt. There is an old carved wooden stopper lodged firmly in the spout.
This commanding 4-Gallon survives in remarkable, as-made condition. No chips, cracks, repaired damage or other excuses. There is a minor stain (front, lower right) and small iron ping (reverse, lower left). Stack marks near base noted for complete descriptive accuracy. A super clean example that will not disappoint, especially if condition is of utmost importance in your collection.
See photos for complete details and close-ups. Please consider them as part of the description. Measures 17-1/2"H x 10"W overall. Add 4 gallons of water and youre looking at roughly 46lbs!
