An exceptional salt-glazed Stoneware Jug with A+ Cobalt Floral decoration, 2-Gallon capacity, New York State origin, c. Bulbous, semi-ovoid form with tooled spout and applied strap handle.Impressed with a cobalt-washed makers stamp reading: JOHN BURGER / ROCHESTER with a freehand Slip-trailed 2 capacity designation just below. Front features an impressive, highly-detailed Daisy-like Floral Blossom with additional Bud, Stems and Foliage in the boldest of Slip-Trailed Cobalt. Shiny, Salt-Glazed exterior; Albany Slip interior.
Condition : One shallow chip on the spout, as shown; otherwise in Excellent, undamaged condition with attractive form, strong color and fine decoration. Inherent glaze and firing imperfections, including a small unglazed area on the upper handle, and some faint surface-only lines, reverse (lower left), noted for complete descriptive accuracy. No repairs, restoration work or other excuses.
