Description : A fine, antique Stoneware Storage Jar with freehand stripes and cobalt stenciled advertising decoration, 2-Gallon capacity, SW Pennsylvania origin, ca. Wheel-thrown, Semi-Ovoid form with tooled, rounded rim. Bold stenciled cobalt merchant advertising reads: WM HASLAGE / & CO / GROCERS AND / TEA DEALERS / No. 18 Diamond / PITTS , with a 2 capacity designation below, flanked by stenciled Roses.
Freehand cobalt stripes at rim and base. Gray Salt-Glazed exterior; Albany or Mineral Slip interior. Haslage was a well-respected 19thC. Merchant in the historic Diamond Market area, which was essentially the original Pittsburgh Town Square and Dealer Marketplace. This crock was likely a special order from one of the Greensboro (PA) manufactories.
