An exceptional Whisky or Storage Jug with freehand stripes, dashes and cobalt stenciled advertising decoration, 2-Gallon capacity, SW Pennsylvania origin, ca. Wheel-thrown, highly-bulbous form with rounded shoulder, tooled spout and applied strap handle. Crisp stenciled cobalt merchant advertising reads: Samuel Cooper / Pittsburgh , with multiple freehand cobalt stripes, squiggles, dashes and a Fancy Pennsylvania (2-Gallon) capacity designation. There is an old cork lodged firmly in the mouth; (3) protective felt pads have been added to the base. Cooper was a well-respected 19thC.

Condition : Contact marks on the shoulder and upper handle, as shown; otherwise Excellent to Near Mint with very strong color and perfect, crisp stenciling. This jug survives in remarkable, as-made condition and was an absolute pleasure to photograph!No chips, cracks, repaired damaged, restoration work or other excuses.
