Description : A rare, antique Stoneware Storage Jug with cobalt stenciled advertising, Rose decoration and freehand stripes, 2-Gallon capacity, SW Pennsylvania origin, ca. Wheel-thrown, cylindrical form with eased shoulder, tooled spout and applied strap handle. Stenciled cobalt merchant advertising reads: R.
PEET / 21 Diamond / Pittsburgh / Pa. Below, a capacity designation surrounded by multiple (12+) freehand stripes. Above, a stenciled Rose Branch decoration. Merchant in the historic Diamond Market area, which was essentially the original Pittsburgh Town Square and Dealer Marketplace. This Jug was likely a special order from one of the Greensboro (PA) manufactories.
Note : Nearly all known Advertising Stoneware produced for Peet has been attributed to the Boughner Family Pottery. 3rd generation potters from Greensboro, Alexander (Vance) and William Boughner often decorated their wares with extensive striped brushwork consistent with the lower decoration on this jug. See Internet for further information.
Condition : Very Good overall with imperfections noted below. Base with expected wear and chip. Scattered glaze flakes and surface crazing noted throughout.
Inherent glaze, surface and firing imperfections noted for descriptive accuracy. No cracks, repaired damage or restoration work. See photos for complete details and close-ups. Please consider them as part of the description.
Desirable size, form and PA Merchant Advertising. Measures approximately 14-1/4H x 7-1/4W overall. Good Luck, thanks for looking, and be sure to bookmark my Auctions, listed and ending daily.
