A fine, antique Stoneware Jar with rare Incised and Cobalt-filled Decorations, 3-Gallon capacity, Manhattan, New York City origin, early-1800s. Wheel-thrown, Ovoid form with squared rim and applied loop/lug handles.Decorated on both sides with incised and cobalt-filled Drape & Tassel motifs. In addition, heavy cobalt accents at each handle terminal. Shiny, salt glazed exterior; Albany or Mineral Slip interior. Condition : Very Good overall with artistic decorations and bold color; minor imperfections are noted below. One old chip on rim; a few shallow chips on the footed base. In-the-making clay separation lines visible on interior.
A few minor surface lines noted on exterior. The rim and body are asymmetrical and slightly misshapen.
Inherent glaze, surface and firing imperfections mentioned for descriptive accuracy. Both handles are original and completely intact. No repaired damage or restoration work. Measures approximately 13-3/4H x 10-1/2W overall with a base diameter of 6-3/4. The inner and outer rim diameters are 6-3/4.
