Description : A charming 4# Butter Crock with cobalt stenciled merchant advertising, Half-Gallon (2Qt) capacity, SW Pennsylvania origin, ca. Wheel-thrown, cylindrical form with tooled and rounded rim. Stenciled cobalt merchant advertising surrounding a floral embellishment reads: Jas. Rankin & Son / Grocers, / Washington, Pa.

Salt-Glazed exterior; Albany Slip interior. James Rankin was probably a small (local or railroad) merchant in Little Washington on the outskirts of Pittsburgh. I can find no further information on the firm, but the surname is fairly prominent throughout Allegheny County i.

The borough of Rankin, about 8mi south of Pittsburgh. This small butter crock was likely a special order through the pottery of Hamilton & Jones, located in nearby Greensboro. The stenciled k in Rankin is blurry, as shown. No chips, cracks, repairs, restoration work or other excuses. A very desirable SW Pennsylvania size and form that will complement any collection.

I would consider this advertising butter Rare. See photos for complete details and close-ups. Please consider them as part of the description. Measures only 5-3/8H x 6-3/8W overall with a base diameter of 6; weighs 3lb 3oz. Good Luck, thanks for looking, and be sure to bookmark my Auctions, listed and ending daily.
