Description : An impressive Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Floral Decoration, 4-Gallon capacity, New England origin, ca. Wheel-thrown, cylindrical form with tooled rim and applied lug handles. Salt-Glazed exterior; Albany Slip interior. Impressed under the rim with a cobalt-washed stamp: BULLARD & SCOTT / CAMBRIDGEPORT, MASS , with a capacity designation below. Little is known about the partnership of Joseph Bullard and Alexander Scott, and their stoneware manufactory located in the Allston neighborhood of Boston. Laura Woodside Watkins mentions them very briefly in Early New England Potters and Their Wares pp. I have always assumed the pair were liquor or grocery merchants of some kind, and had their jugs and crocks made at Frank Nortons manufactory in nearby Worcester, MA. Front features a large Onion-type Floral decoration, artistically executed in bold Slip-Trailed Cobalt. Condition : Moderate wear on the base consistent with age and use; and a shallow rim chip on reverse, as shown; otherwise in Very Good to Excellent, as-made condition with strong color. Super clean inside and out. No cracks, repaired damage or restoration work. See photos for complete details and close-ups. Please consider them as part of the description. Measures approximately 12-1/2W x 11-1/2H overall, including the handles. The inner and outer rim diameters are 10-1/4 and 11-3/4, respectively. Weighs approximately 14.5 lbs!
