Stoneware Jug with elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, 4-Gallon capacity, attributed to Somerset Potters Works, Bristol County, Massachusetts, ca. Wheel-thrown, cylindrical form with eased shoulder, oversized tooled spout and applied strap handle.
Tan, Salt-Glazed exterior; Albany Slip interior. Decorated with a large Double Floral decoration on stylized ground with additional accents and flourishes, artistically executed in the boldest of Slip Trailed Cobalt.
There is a cobalt-washed capacity designation on the upper shoulder. The design is consistent with the works by Leonard and Benjamin Chase. See Internet or Bill Ketchums American Stoneware , p.Condition : Expected rim and base wear, including a few shallow chips, as shown; otherwise in Very Good to Excellent, as-made condition with very strong color. Some body discoloration noted, mainly on the reverse side. Inherent glaze, surface and firing imperfections noted for complete descriptive accuracy.
