Description : An early Stoneware Fruit or Canning Jar with cobalt-stenciled maker advertising, Greene County, Pennsylvania origin, c. Wheel-thrown, tapered form with tooled shoulder, rounded outer rim and integrated Wax Sealer inner rim. Salt-glazed exterior; Albany or Mineral Slip interior. Decorated with a banner-like cobalt stencil reading: JAS. Condition : Very Good to Excellent overall with strong color, crisp stencil, desirable size and highly sought-after maker.Minor imperfections are noted below. Wax Sealer Rim with some expected wear and two small chips consistent with age and use, as shown.
Body is exceptionally clean and undamaged. Base with perimeter wear and two shallow flakes; one of which is glazed-over, in-the-making. No cracks, repaired damage or restoration work.Inherent glaze, surface and firing imperfections noted for descriptive accuracy. This would probably be considered a 1/2 Gallon, but actually only holds about 7 Cups. A sound investment for any advanced collector of decorated Stoneware or Americana.
