Description : A rare, salt-glazed Stoneware Jug with A+ Cobalt Floral decoration, 1-Gallon capacity, Northeastern US origin, ca. Cylindrical, wheel-thrown form with eased shoulder and applied strap handle. Impressed with a crisp, cobalt-washed makers stamp: NICHOLS & ALFORD / BURLINGTON, VT.
The mark was used for less than 12 months (in 1854), resulting in relatively low numbers of marked wares. All are highly sought after by advanced collectors of American and Vermont Stoneware. See Internet for further information on the Chittenden County manufactory.
Front features an exceptional, well-proportioned leafy Floral, artistically executed in the boldest of Brushed Cobalt. The photos are probably the best description for this Keeper. Condition : Minor soiling and wear, including a few small nicks, that would be expected for a 164yr-old piece of Stoneware, as shown; otherwise in Excellent condition with strong color and fine decoration.Inherent surface and firing imperfections noted for descriptive accuracy. No fry, no cracks, no repairs, no restoration work. See photos for complete details and close-ups. Please consider them as part of the description. Measures 12"H x 7W overall with a base diameter of 6-1/2"; weighs 6.4 lbs.
