Description : A rare and important New York City Stoneware Storage Jar with Drape & Heart Decoration, approximate 3-Gallon capacity, David Morgan, maker, Corlears Hook, Manhattan, ca. Wheel-thrown, Semi-Ovoid form with tooled squared rim, tooled base and Open Loop handles. Impressed on one side with a crisp, cobalt-washed makers stamp: DAVID MORGAN / NEW YORK, above a 3-Tier graduated and cobalt-highlighted Crescent Drape & Heart motif. Reverse features a similar graduated 4-Tier impressed decoration with strong cobalt infill.Additionally, each handle terminal with brushed cobalt accents. The Lid with brushed cobalt on the perimeter and around handle base is certainly a later marriage, but the size and fit is near perfect; I would consider this decorated cover a very nice bonus with the Morgan Jar. Background : David Morgan worked for New York City potter John Crolius Jr. In 1798, he temporarily took over Thomas Commeraws kiln on Cherry Street near Corlears Hook in Manhattan. Morgans signed examples are considered extremely rare and prized by museums and advanced collectors of early New York City stoneware. See Internet for further information on the maker and realized comps i. Crocker Farm Action: Lot #32 (7/13), Lot #10 (3/15), Lot #51 (11/07), et al. Interesting Note : This 3G Jar is decorated with an additional tier of impressed Hearts & Swags on both sides. See above Lots for comparison of known Morgan Jars of the same 3-Gallon capacity. Lid : Professionally restored to Excellent condition. Jar : Damage noted on the base with radiating cracks and hairlines extending into the lower body, as shown. Tight 2 vertical rim hairline upper left, near handle. Rim with expected wear and a few shallow flakes. Portions of the lower body with associated food/grease staining. Both handles are intact and in their original, unrestored condition.
Inherent glaze, firing and surface imperfections noted for descriptive accuracy. Displays brilliantly as-is, or a complete Show Stopper with a little expert attention.
See photos for details and close-ups. Please consider them as part of the description. Jar measures 12-3/4H x 10-3/4W overall, including the handles. The inner and outer rim diameters are 7-1/2 and 8-3/4, respectively. Diameter of body: 9-3/4; diameter of base: 6-3/4.
