Antique Stoneware Smith & Snows 1866 White Root Beer Bottle with Cobalt, Dover NH
Description : An early, Patent Root Beer Bottle with cobalt advertising, 1-Quart capacity, New Hampshire origin, ca. Wheel-thrown cylindrical form with tapered shoulder and oversized Blob Top finish. Impressed on the shoulder with a bold, 4-line cobalt-washed stamp: D. / SMITH & SNOWS / WHITEROOT / PAT JULY. Background : Smiths White Root was patented as a Summer beverage in 1866 by Henry Smith and Hiram Snow of Dover, NH. It was naturally carbonated through fermentation, containing a combination of sarsaparilla, princes pine, sassafras, life-of-man root and spruce oil. Condition : Very Good to Excellent overall with strong color. Minor imperfections are noted below. Upper rim with wear and a small ding, as shown. Shallow flake on the body.
