Stoneware Batter Jug or Pail with Cobalt decoration, 1.5 Gallon capacity, attributed to Whites of Utica, NY State, ca. Wheel-thrown, bulbous form with integrated tubular pour spout, two applied ears and a lug handle on reverse side, near the base.
Decorated with a heavily striped, Orchid-type Floral in bold, Slip-Trailed Cobalt; this is one of Whites signature designs. Theres a freehand cobalt 6 above the Floral, to denote capacity, in Quarts. Tan, Salt-Glazed exterior; Albany Slip interior. The wire and turned bail handle is likely a later addition I think.. Condition : Probably used a handful of times; Holidays, Family, etc when one might require more than a one-gallon of batter!
These pails are fairly scarce in any condition. Minor utilitarian wear/soiling noted on the base, body, rim and ears as shown; otherwise Very Good with strong color.
Some minor post-production imperfections are noted below. Both ears have expected internal wear where a handle would rub.Short hairline noted on base, below the handle. Some minor surface decoration at spout base, left side. Inherent glaze, surface and firing imperfections noted for complete descriptive accuracy. See photos for complete details and please consider them as part of the description. Measures 10-1/2H x 7-3/4W overall (body) with a base diameter of 7.
