Description : An antique Stoneware Whisky Jug of Worcester, Massachusetts interest, 1-Gallon capacity, ca. Wheel-thrown, cylindrical form with eased shoulder, tooled spout and applied strap handle. Impressed on the upper shoulder with a large, cobalt-washed stamp reading: WORCESTER MARKET / WORCESTER MASS. The historic Worcester Market was perhaps the largest indoor market at the time, and a prototype of the modern supermarket. A typical Saturday saw as many as 25,000 visitors.
This jug likely pre-dates the large commercial building on Main Street, completed in 1914. The original Market was founded around 1894 by Fayette Amidon. See Internet for further information.
Condition : Expected rim and base wear from use, as shown; otherwise Very Good. Inherent surface and firing imperfections, including glaze skips and drips, noted for descriptive accuracy.
