This is a beautiful Antique German 1800s, 19th century, Westerwald Salt Glazed Stoneware Crock With Cobalt Blue Designs. I got it from a family friend years ago who told me that it was in his family for generations and that it was brought by his mother when they came to the U. From Germany right before World War 2 started. It has 3 cobalt blue stripes around the crock, 2 on the top and 1 on the bottom.
The handles have cobalt blue stripes across them with cobalt blue outlining where the handles attach. On one side it is marked/signed either 1 T or 1 J in cobalt blue under the handle, under the other handle it has a scrolling type cobalt blue design. The front and back both have nearly identical large scrolling designs in cobalt blue. All of the cobalt blue coloring is rich and vibrant. It has 2 hairline cracks in it, as shown in the photos. They are not major by any means and certainly do not detract from the looks or displayability of this beautiful crock. There is a small imperfection on the rim that occurred while the crock was originally being made that they glazed right over. It is heavy, strong and sturdy, and has no chips on it.
Crock measures 10 9/16" tall X 9 1/2" wide handle to handle X 7 3/8" wide across rim X 6 1/4" wide across bottom. This Is A Beautiful Antique German Crock, it would look great in any Antique Stoneware or Crock collection!
