Offered for your consideration is an outstanding Early American J. Norton & Co stoneware jug with Folk Art cobalt bird decoration. Julius Norton used his stamp on this Benny Bird jug.

The one-gallon whiskey jug has a. Nicely glazed medium tan mottled patina and dark brown Albany slip interior. Norton designs during this time period are widely considered the finest of all 19th C.

American stoneware and this example is no exception. A well-potted, cylindrical form with eased shoulder, semi-squared spout and an. Especially nice loop strap formed ribbed gripper handle. The front features a bird perched on a stylized branch in slip-trailed cobalt hand-painted by the well-known artist John Hilfinger. The jugs blue decorated design contrasts beautifully with its light Vermont clay and makes it extremely visually pleasing.
