JOHNSBURY, VERMONT STONEWARE JUG, W/PAINTED. 19th c American decorated stoneware. 13 " Height x 7 ¼ " Base diameter x 2 ¼ Rim diameter.
Offered for your review and careful consideration is this very nice, mid-19th century decorated American stoneware, salt glazed handled jug, with double floral motif decoration. It's was fashioned by Fenton & Hancock of St.The vessel's exterior sidewalls are decorated in putty white salt glaze and the hand decorated double floral motif was realized with blue slip glaze, gesturally and quickly applied with a brush, giving the artistry a wet, just-applied look and feeling, with great plasticity. The top of the pouring spout is without damage, hairline cracks, loss or significant staining. The exterior shell of the jug does however have some faint streaking that seems to have somewhat permeated the glossy, reflective salt glaze on the sidewalls. This is present but is not a fatal distraction from the overall viewing of this rare 1 1/2 gallon jug. There's also a small'touch' or an old ceramic'bruise,' which is a localized area of ceramic loss and an ensuing small, superficial fracture in the clay right along the extreme lower margin. This was clearly the result of a previous'drop' or of the jug coming into contact with a hard surface. Superficial damage to these objects is quite common, as they were designed for use and are now 150-170 years old. These American 19th century stoneware jugs were intended to store liquids of all kinds and were a kitchen and pantry staple for any 19th century New England and Mid-Atlantic region household.
The damage to the jug is evidence of that activity and lends itself to better reconstruction of the narrative surrounding these wonderful handmade objects that once held whiskey, vinegar, oils, brine, as well as the temporary storage of milk and cream. They would have been kept in a cool basement or cold cellar and have originally been corked.
A 1 1/2 gallon size is fairly uncommon. The deep, rich cobalt blue, double floral motif decoration is outstanding and is clear, crisp and vivid. Johnsbury, Vermont, near the US/Canadian border, with love, comes this wonderful mid-19th century decorated stoneware jug. Let it smile back down upon you in your kitchen.Good to Very Good overall antique condition. There's some very slight discoloration of the vessel's exterior sidewalls that occurred long ago. There's also a'touch' or small'bruise' in the ceramic sidewall at the bottom edge of the jug and an old associated, superficial horizontal fracture. The structural integrity of the vessel is not compromised and the jug remains as it was found and in completely untouched, undisturbed original antique condition.
