NR Antique Stoneware 1G Jug with Cobalt Tree, Ballardvale, Andover MA, c. 1880s
Description : A scarce Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Tree or Flowering Plant Decoration, 1-Gallon capacity, Essex County, MA origin, ca. Wheel-thrown, cylindrical form with eased shoulder and applied strap handle. Impressed on the shoulder with a cobalt-washed stamp: BALLARD VALE / STONEWARE MFG. This relatively obscure Andover, MA manufactory was located on the Shawsheen River in the village of Ballardvale. See Internet for further information. Front features a multi-leaved Flowing Plant or Stylized Tree, executed in very bold, Slip-Trailed Cobalt. Shiny, Salt-Glazed exterior; Albany Slip interior. Condition : Two shallow chips on rim, and in-the-making clay separation on lower handle terminal, as shown; otherwise in Very Good, as-made condition with strong color and uncommon decoration.
The decoration has cobalt fry on areas of highest relief and there is a stone ping, upper left. See photos for complete details and please consider them as part of the description.
