Stoneware Jug with profuse Cobalt Floral Decoration, 2-Gallon capacity, New York State origin, ca. Wheel-thrown, cylindrical form with eased shoulder, tooled spout and applied strap handle. There is an early carved wooden stopper in the mouth, which is removable.
Impressed on the upper shoulder with a strong cobalt-washed stamp reading, simply: WHITES UTICA , with a capacity designation above. See Internet for further information on the Whites Family Oneida County manufactory. Front features an elaborate Floral Bouquet, artistically executed in bold, Slip-Trailed Cobalt. Note : This design is very uncommon on Utica wares; perhaps this was done by one of the Norton (Bennington, VT) decorators.Condition : Minor rim and base wear, and a very faint, surface hairline noted on the rear left side (see close-up, photo #4); otherwise in Excellent, as-made condition with strong color and exceptional decoration.
