A rare piece of early American pottery. Marked Richard Butt stoneware jar.
Manufactured in Washington DC during the 1840's. The jar has an ovoid form with small tab handles.A blue floral and swag pattern repeats on both sides. Signed pieces of Butt stoneware are very scarce. This piece is marked R. Also a size mark of 1 1/2 gallons. The pot displays a dark body with deep blue glaze. Perhaps as a result of improper firing. This is a great example of Washington DC pottery with roots in Maryland. Butt originally worked near Rockville in Montgomery County MD. Cracking around the foot in one area which appears to be possibly a firing flaw. The item "Richard Butt Washington DC Cobalt Decorated Stoneware Jar" is in sale since Tuesday, March 06, 2018.
