A small-size, Antique Stoneware Jug with primitive Cobalt Floral decoration and maker advertising, 1-Gallon capacity, Pennsylvania, c. Wheel-thrown, slightly bulbous form with eased shoulder, tooled spout and applied strap handle. Impressed below the rim with cobalt-washed stamp reading: COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG.This the mark of John Cowden and Isaac Wilcox, active in Dauphin County from 1863 to about 1880. See Internet for further information on this well-respected partnership. Front features large Stylized Floral Decoration artistically-executed in the boldest of Brushed Cobalt. In addition, upper & lower handle terminals are highlighted with cobalt accents. Shiny, Salt-glazed exterior; Albany or Mineral Slip interior. Condition : Excellent overall with fine decoration, charming size and desirable makers mark. Minor imperfections are noted below. Spout with expected wear and soiling including a shallow flake on interior rim. Handle is original and undamaged. The cobalt is a bit light on the upper terminal, right side; and there is a tiny stone ping, in-the-making , near the lower terminal. Body is exceptionally clean; there is one small stone ping, in-the-making , noted on the left shoulder.
