This is a beautiful and rarer specimen of the famous James Hamilton & Co Greensboro PA company that made their signature stoneware crockery. Little of their work survives. Fortunately for the past 50 years this 3 gallon crock was part of a personal collection of a pioneering antique dealer in southeast PA who was strict in her selections and was highly reputable. The 3 gallon size of Jas A Hamilton & Co is rarer than the 5 or 2 gallon size.
It is in good condition for an antique of this age- 124 to 155 years old. There is a hairline crack that is about 5 inches long that is visible on the left side (the last picture captures this the best). The hairline crack continues to the top mouth rim- but is not deep on the top of the mouth. Then on the opposite side there is a small chip. The crock is not evenly round in all areas- there is some waviness, also there is some variation in height visible in the mouth area.
The top has a bit of a slant but the bottom sits flat on the surface. It sits very sturdily on whatever piece of furniture I put it on without rocking. The salt glaze patina and blue graphics are largely intact with that signature Hamilton humble flair. Only a few spots were worn off.
The handles are intact and strong. Most of the mouth rim is intact except for the hairline crack and small chip. A few other very small divots can be found. Extra care will be taken to insulate against dropping and breakage.
