Stoneware Jug with primitive Cobalt Floral Decoration, 2-Gallon capacity, Bristol County, Massachusetts origin, ca. Wheel-thrown, cylindrical form with eased shoulder, tooled oversized spout and applied strap handle. Shiny, Salt-Glazed exterior; Albany Slip interior. Impressed on the upper shoulder with a crisp, cobalt-washed stamp reading: SOMERSET. This the mark of Leonard and Benjamin Chase, dating between 1847 and 1882.
Front features a Double Flower Spray decoration, artistically executed in bold Slip-Trailed Cobalt. Condition : Very Good to Excellent, essentially as-made condition with strong color and desirable Bristol County, MA mark.
Minor imperfections are noted below. Minor discoloration on the body, right & rear. Spout has rather pronounced lean to the left. Tiny flake on the outer rim, right side.
