For sale is this estate fresh and recently discovered on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, mid-19th century West Troy (New York) Pottery Ame ri can antique New York State primitive, diminutive, 1-gallon, salt glazed, cobalt blue decorated stoneware ceramic handled jug, featuring hand painted floral front sidewall motif, with an embedded butterfly, spanning nearly the entirety of the facia of the jug. The now 150 to 170 year old jug doesn't have any hairline cracks, sidewall bruises or ensuing ceramic material loss. The wire cut bottom baseplate is intact, with no edge flea-bites. The vessel doesn't have any fractures or hairline cracks. The only damage is very minor and slight and amounts to two small flea-bites and ceramic loss on the top knobby pouring spout. The attached slab constructed handle is without hairline cracks or material loss. The one gallon jug is clearly stamped West Troy (NY) Pottery in cobalt blue slip glaze on the sloped shoulder of its putty white front sidewall. A spot (drip) of clear salt glaze has puddled to the stamp's right. Episodes of burnt umber and burnt sienna, as well as instances of pewter gray, populate its exterior, salt glazed, putty white surfaces.
Some organic matter has long ago dripped down from the pouring spout and has seemingly etched into the surface of the jug. No aggressive attempt has been made to remove this occurrence. The jug was very carefully washed and dried, using only tepid water, very mild soap and hand dried with a soft, cotton cloth. It remains 100% untouched and as it was found in the estate it was removed and taken from.Nice and small, you could literally place it almost anywhere. Good to Very Good overall antique condition.
